My guest today is Mark Kirkland
Mark is a three time Emmy Award winning Director (The Simpsons).
Multi Award winning Filmmaker, Writer/Director/ Antique movie camera collector and cinematographer.
At 17 he entered The Experimental Animation Program at Cal Arts where he learned from Golden Age Animation Masters that include
Jules Engel
Filmmaker and revolutionary animator, Jules Engel talks about getting to know Walt Disney and reflects on the studio’s working atmosphere.
Ollie Johnston
On the left, Frank Thomas chomping on Mickey. On the Right Ollie.
Part 1 of a great 3 part bio on Ollie in fact the entire Disney Family Album series is fantastic!
Moe Gollub
If that wasn’t awesome enough, he and classmate Richard Jeffries created an animated film set to the EPIC David Bowie song “Fame” which won the Student Academy Award for Animation! They were the first Cal Arts students to have done so! Is it any wonder?
Mark began his professional animation career doing layout as Moe Gollub’s assistant at Hanna Barbera Studios while at the same time finishing his studies at Cal Arts! Mark worked on many of the Saturday Morning Cartoons yours truly grew up with! Shows like Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, Challenge of the SuperFriends, and Godzilla! As a result of working on so many different kinds of shows Mark became an ace at drawing in many different styles. This a very valuable skill in the animation business.
In 1990 he joined the Simpsons during season two, and currently holds the record for directing the most episodes. As of the recording of the interview Mark was well into directing his 69th Episode of the Simpsons! He’s won three Emmy s for his exceptional work on the Simpsons episodes:
Behind the Laughter
Three Gays of the Condo
Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind
