I was just listening to your story and that was pretty funny. I know how hard it is not to laugh when there is a lot of pressure not to, it can be torture! Now I want to share with you one of my most embarrasing moments…it has to be the time I grabbed my gym teachers boobs in high school. We were playing tag and I was IT and I was about to tag her when she decided to whip around. It wasn’t as mortifying as it sounds and she played it off in a way that didn’t make me feel too bad, the entire class had a good laugh.
And thanks for putting Terry Gilliam in the pantheon of awesomeness! I love his animations and two movies that I enjoy by him are The Fisher King and Dr. Parnasseus and the Imaginarium.

Well, I’ve been doing those ten minute drawings to warm up for 26 years. Ever since my 7th grade art teacher Mrs. Smith had me do it. It improves your drawing speed and develops your creative thinking. I always do a fun 10 minute doodle before the main event to warm up. Like I told Tazmo, if you are serious about trying it out, I can give you some silly ideas to do. I’d love to see what you draw.

Hey Raul,
I’m already a listener, but i was surprised when I did a google search for “10 minute drawing exercises” and it linked back to your site. I was looking for simple exercises I could do on my commute to and from work on the Bart. How did this exercise turn out? Can I find the results somewhere? Or maybe a list of the 10,001 silly drawing ideas?

Jacob! My man! Thanks for the kind words! Knowing that my ravings are getting through and helping my fellow artists out is what keeps me going.

Wouldn’titbecoolitis (TM) is such a rampant force in art and entertainment. People forget about how important things like character and story are. I don’t care how many CG, Len flares, green screen, 3D, HD, elements are in the shot. I don’t care how many rendered photoshop filtered layers it took to color your comic book. It’s all shiny stuff. Like picking up a Hostess Din Dong you know? It’s foil wrapper glinting in the sunlight beckoning and tantalizing you. You tear it open and take a huge bite only to find out, it’s not a ding dong, but a turd wrapped in shiny foil. Like the Green Lanturd. I had to gargle three bottles of listerine to get the nasty taste out of my mouth after seeing that dumb movie. I call that movie Digital Effects Artist Porn.

Mr. Raul. This is my first time writing a comment on the Man vs. Art site. I’ve been listening to this podcast nonstop for the past several months. By doing so, I’ve come to think about the creative process in whole new fascinating ways. I’ve also come to realize that just because I’m nearly 20 doesn’t mean I can afford to perpetuate certain artistic symptoms any longer.

Case in point, Wouldntitbecoolitis, which I first learned about in episode 36. As someone who was only a kid during the 1990s when this virus began, so many movies and songs carried it to such an extent that I didn’t think much of it. I’m guilty of getting into Star Wars through the dumb prequel movies as a kid before discovering the glory of the Original Three Movies. Once I watched the breathtaking story of Luke Skywalker in 2008ish, I could never take the prequel movies seriously again. It makes me wonder how Lucas went cuckoo.

Now to the subject of Episode 52, I loved the way you answered a broad spectrum of questions from different specific people concerning our mentality toward our craft. And thanks for the beautiful poem by Hokusai, it inspires me to reach enlightenment by trying to tell stories through my work rather than draw Wolverine Knockoff #13 riding rocket-propelled motorcycles. LOL! Oh and if the show wasn’t legendary already, it has more cowbell thanks to Christopher Walken’s shoutout.

Please keep the show going, as an aspiring artist going into comics/animation, I need someone who will keep it Raul during these hard economic and social times. God bless you!

That’s the spirit! You need to maintain that positive outlook and concentrate on your art.

When I was at Disney it took me over 5 years to get out of Clean-up and into the Animation Department. I must have submitted my reel and portfolio at least 10 times and got smacked down each and every time. But I never gave up. Then one morning my phone rang and the very next day I was Glen Keane’s assistant on Treasure Planet. Just like you it was never easy for me. I busted my ass for every break I ever got, while people all around me got all the breaks handed to them. Stoke that fire in your belly and give it hell! Belly fire goes a long way in Art!

Thanks Mr. Raul for the reaffirmation!!! I was so P.O.ed when I found out that I didn’t get the scholarship to artcenter@night, and when I got to a particular community college and didn’t get into the art scholarship either all this past weekend. You don’t know how embroiled I was after so many tries, but I got over it pretty fast and after listening to this episode it made me reaffirm myself. I am going to try again with a different approach…and so Thank you.

Yes! I dare say that the act of drawing is at the heart of all visual art endeavors. It kills me to talk to so-called painters and hear them say that they don’t draw. Are you kidding me!? Or when talking with architects or architectural draftsmen and finding that they have no need to draw. What? What the heck does it mean to be a “draftsman” then!?! These people represent a culture that fails to observe and come up with any innovative ideas. They have allowed themselves to be slaves of their tools and not masters of their craft. I think that anyone that is in the profession of creating anything visual (painters, architects,engineers, movie-makers, etc.) should make it a habit to draw on a regular basis. Surely anyone getting an education in these said fields should absolutely understand the rudiments of getting things down on paper before moving on to the next step.
Drawing is how we think, articulate, clarify, illustrate, elaborate and create. It is so important. Thanks for another awesome episode.

Such an appropriate episode. As one who has had the opportunity to teach in a variety of class settings, it’s those misconceptions about art and artists that just drive me crazy. I try really hard to break the barriers of these misconceptions while teaching the kids. I strive to make art accessible for students to enjoy and experience.

As for people who knock abstract or non-representational art, I agree with you totally Gras, they are dumb asses. “Sunset over Pomona by Grasiela Rodriguez?! That don’t look like no sunset over Pomona. That looks like someone shoved a cherry bomb up a skunks butt and lit it! Anybody could have done that.” What these mouth breathers don’t understand is that YES! Anybody could have painted that. But the point is NOBODY EVER DID. Grasiela DID!

Awesome! On referencing that art seperates us from animals…people are always baggin on abstract stuff like Jackson Pollock and they always say stuff like “Anyone can do that…even a monkey..” Well, yeah, a monkey CAN do that…but an monkey won’t know that it’s art.
